Pathways to Independence

Ruth's Story:

Rehabilitation Teaching re My Home

The rehabilitation I received was very helpful because they came to my apartment and they looked over my apartment to remove any obstacles or anything that might be in the way. Click here to return the Services page.

Rehabilitation Teaching re My Personal Phone Book

The thing that I appreciated most was the large print phone book, the directory that they made for me. It was very difficult. I could never look up any phone numbers and here they took my list of friends and every other department or organizations I wanted to use and they made me my own phone book with large print, large black block letters that I certainly appreciated.

But even more than that I appreciated the large sheet that was made for me in place of my bankbook. A large sheet that I can put under my machine and see all of the numbers now and I am able to keep my own bank account. Click here to return the Services page.

Learning to Get Around

I love to walk and the service that they've given me to help me with my walking meant a great deal to me. Click here to return the Services page.

Learning to Use a Cane

I am able to use a cane because I was taught how to use the white cane. I was even taken downtown to an intersection where I learned to cross an intersection with traffic going both ways. Click here to return the Services page.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration to me means the loss of central vision. I still have peripheral vision but anything that I look at directly like the face of a person or reading a book anything that I have to look at directly, I cannot see. Click here to return the Services page.

Discovering ABVI

Well it was certainly a blessing that I made contact with ABVI because they have offered so many services to me that have made my living so much easier. Click here to return the Services page.

Assistance with "Reading"

I love to read and I was told that I could continue to learn about books because they have a tape machine, a special tape machine, where you can receive books from the Library of Congress. You receive them and return them in the little green box and you don't pay the postage. Click here to return the Services page.

Support ABVI

ABVI certainly should be supported in the community because the people that are blind still have contributions to make. Click here to return the Services page.
